On the surface Helena Bertinelli looks like any other young Italian American woman: attractive, stylish, cultured and educated, she spends her days teaching English at an inner city High School. She likes cooking and opera and has been known to volunteer at youth groups designed to keep children of the street and out of crime. But all of this hides a much more sinister past and a night time occupation as the masked vigilante, Huntress.

Helena was the daughter of a powerful mob boss in Gotham City, where she lived until she was 8. That was when someone was hired to kill the entire Bertinelli family and her father, mother and brother where shot to death in front of her whilst they ate dinner. Helena does not know why she was spared. That moment was to colour the rest of her life as she sought vengeance against those who had murdered her family. After the death of her family, Helena was sent to live with distant relatives in Sicily, where she was trained by her assassin cousin in martial arts and the use of crossbows.

Helena stayed in Sicily until she was 21 when her vendetta against those who had killed her family and stolen her inheritance led her back to Gotham. There she took the name ‘Huntress’ and vowed to use her training to stop the Mafia and release their hold on Gotham, whatever the consequences to herself and despite Batman’s initial objections to her working in his city as a vigilante.

As the Huntress, Helena is more ruthless than other vigilantes and is less reluctant to kill than most, a major source of contention between herself and Batman and his allies, though she has a good working relationship with his teenage sidekick Robin, whom she has worked with several times. Despite this, she constantly feels a need to prove herself to Batman and gain his acceptance.

Helena comes to the bar during the No-Mans-Land story arc from the Batman comics. She is currently operating as both Huntress and Batgirl.
